Yesterday, Verizon Wireless users in New Jersey’s Monmouth, Ocean, and Middlesex counties got a terrifying text message that the coming global superpocalypse was not only coming, but had arrived. The message, completely devoid of context, urged recipents to “Take Shelter Now” and purported to be a direct order from the “U.S. Govern[ment].” Of course, the text left a lot of questions unanswered, like “what’s going on?” and “why is there such a specific end time?” and people naturally started freaking out. Fortunately, the police were able to send out a message explaining that there was not, in fact, a civil emergency. Verizon Sends Out Bogus But Terrifying Take Shelter Alert | Geekosystem. Good gravy! I guess it’s a good thing that this exists just in case, but way to scare people! There should be some awareness about this program though, since it’s nationwide and across many carriers. The handset itself is just a rectangle with a large screen (there’s no sight of a “crackberry” keyboard). Outside of the sleek and polished user interface that we’ve never seen before, the overall design looks a little too basic to be real. Perhaps it’s just to get the development wheels turning. In the videos, however, the unassuming device is doing pretty cool stuff like interacting seamlessly with computers, tablets, and a smart table. One woman even uses it to find her desk in a cubicle farm while her colleague uses it to gain access to a room. A widespread service outage wouldn’t bode well for any service provider, but it has got to sting a little extra for RIM. This isn’t the first time that there has been a BlackBerry service outage in North America. To boot, with the iPhone 4S, a huge competitor for everyone, but specifically the flailing, increasingly aimless BlackBerry, this outage could hardly come at a worse time, especially when more and more businesses are abandoning RIM’s proprietary, secure email for alternatives that let employees use phones like the iPhone for work. BlackBerry Black Out Spreads To North America | Geekosystem. Oh RIM…how much longer will you be able to hold on? It’s one thing to keep releasing products to “compete” with Apple and Android…and quite another to research and develop other sorts of technology you can lead in…perhaps you should do the...

The reason they cite is for the purpose of tracking 911 calls. Whether or not that’s just a smokescreen depends on your personal level of paranoia and frequency of illegal activites. Currently, if a non-GPS enabled phone dials 911, the provider has to triangulate the location, which is annoying and inefficient, apparently. Straight up GPS is just much better for figuring out exactly where you are, however that makes you feel. FCC Rules All Cellphones Must Have GPS by 2018 | Geekosystem. While everyone is worried about Facebook, the government is making everyone easier to track. Wonder how long it will take for this to be on...

Nestled in Sony Ericsson’s feature phone past is a rich history of Walkman devices, some good, some bad, all purporting to offer enhanced music features, something that many phones will now offer you. The Mix Walkman is a Walkman feature phone and by feature phone we mean that it isn’t an Android device like the Xperia line, it’s a return to the proprietary OS of before. If it’s Android you’re after, you’ll want the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman hands-on – Pocket-lint. It’s interesting that they would bring back this popular brand only to attach it to a non-competitive smart phone. Walkman had a big opportunity back when the iPod came out…not sure about it now. As someone mentioned in the comment section though, an audio feature rich phone would be huge. Perhaps Sony should look into...
